Sometimes, at some part of life, happiness may feel like an unachievable holy grail of emotion. Everything seems to fall off all at once but luckily, if we understand how our happy hormones work, we may be able to trigger it more easily than we realize.
We can’t control the problems and the circumstances that are happening or going to happen, it is not in our hands, but what’s controllable is our response and how we react to it. There are some ways by which we can increase our happy brain chemicals and alter our moods.
HERE ARE THE HAPPY HORMONES OF THE HUMAN BODY AND THE WAYS THEY CAN BE BOOSTED:
OXYTOCIN
When you are around someone you love, you automatically just feel good. Suddenly world starts to seem to be a happier place and everything turns beautiful, that is just your oxytocin build-up speaking. All it takes is a nice warm hug or just the touch and feel can do the trick. Mothers may be familiar with oxytocin, it is produced in abundance during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It’s also the high behind MD, a popular party drug, which releases oxytocin in the brain & primarily associated with loving touch and close relationships.
Oxytocin produces numerous warm fuzzy feelings by stimulating dopamine and serotonin while reducing anxiety. Get your dose of oxytocin by giving your loved one or even your pet a cuddle rather than popping up on ecstasy.
ENDORPHINS
Do you feel happy and lightheaded after your workout session? That overwhelming feeling of ecstasy is your endorphins speaking. Your brain reacts by producing these neurotransmitters in response to pain to take the edge off and usually make you feel amazing. Really amazing!
Endorphins are usually compared to opiates due to the intense pleasure that they deliver.
The good news here is that you don’t need to snort up on opium to experience this kind of high. Try having chocolate, taking out time for doing things you love, having spicy food or any food you love, getting intimate with your partner, just going for a spa session, or just lighting up some aromatic candles in your bathroom and having a relaxing warm shower.
SEROTONIN
Serotonin is key to clearing away bouts of depression that lurk around the corners; it is the best-known happy hormone which is the primary substance of antidepressant medicines. Serotonin is like a neurotransmitter that is naturally triggered by what we do.
Exposure to sunlight is one of the best ways to increase serotonin. Happy thoughts, a walk, yoga, or a gym session can do the trick and boost your serotonin levels. Take in some carbohydrates like potato or rice to boost your serotonin levels.
DOPAMINE
Dopamine is a neurotransmitter known as the “chemical of reward”. The feeling you get when you score high, hit a target, complete a task or get an appraisal, you receive a hit of dopamine in your brain cell which tells you that you have done a great job.
You can get your dose of dopamine naturally by volunteering or helping others. It only takes a kind gesture to bring on your dopamine level. Consume a balanced diet rich in protein, vitamins & minerals, meditate and sleep well.
